About the 2023 Tyler Prize Laureates

Dr. Daniel Pauly and Dr. Rashid Sumaila are champions of ocean sustainability. Their prolific scholarship supports efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health. They engage stakeholders globally to achieve the goals envisioned by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

Dr. Pauly has made critical contributions to fisheries ecology and conservation through the development of new ecosystem-based analytical approaches to assess global effects on world fisheries. He also helps the public visualize the decline of global fish stocks through Sea Around Us and Fishbase.

Dr. Sumaila integrates economics, ecology, and other disciplines. His scholarship empowers sustainable management of ocean fishery resources for the benefit of current and future generations. He works directly with communities from the local scale in Africa to the global scale.
