Edward D Goldberg

1989 Laureate

Edward D. Goldberg was a notable geochemist who contributed greatly to the field of marine chemistry. He is most recognized for his work on the biogeochemical cycles of trace metals in the ocean, which had important implications for understanding the impact of human activities on the marine environment.

1963

Goldberg and his team discovered that manganese nodules found on the ocean floor were rich in valuable metals such as nickel, copper, and cobalt, leading to interest in deep sea mining.

1970s

Goldberg conducted research on the behavior of mercury in seawater, which led to the discovery of a previously unknown microbial process that transforms mercury into a highly toxic form known as methylmercury.
